Word from the Changemaker
"I chose to embellish a photograph of my Nonna and took inspiration from artist Victoria Villasana, using embroidery and colorful thread to highlight and embellish features onto her portrait. Like Villasana, I made my photograph black and white to allow my colors to be bolder and stand out among my Nonna's features. I added lots of green and flowers surrounding her head as a symbolism of her growth and love for plants. In her early twenties, she immigrated from Italy to the United States with my Nonno. After moving to Dubuque Iowa, they settled and opened up their own little business, Mario’s Italian Restaurant. Similar to a flower, she and my Nonno started new roots and flourished to create a little community. Additionally, she has always had a green-thumb, and loves spending time gardening and teaching me to garden with her. I used different embroidery techniques such as back stitches and french knots to create a string of flowers and plants. Similar to Villasana, I also added bright colored shapes around her eyes to demonstrate her light and brightness. At the bottom around her shirt I added an addition of colorful abstract shapes to replicate flowers and the memorable connections she leaves on both me and others in my community that we keep close to our hearts. She inspires me to do what I love and build connections with our community through kindness and your strengths. I framed her portrait with colorful fabric with her in the center of the flower as a demonstration of how far she has grown and bloomed into such an important inspiration to me and others of my community."
